They had to pop up sooner or later, best to get it out of the way now. White Zombie have long been, and remain to this day, one of my all-time favourite metal bands. I had the joy of partaking in the White Zombie live experience twice while they were still together. Their set at the Reading Festival (’95?) was pretty epic as it was the start of the day, the crowd was a small group of hardcore followers kicking up a literal dust-storm in front of the stage, and Rob was bounding around the stage like a man possessed. However as good as the show was, it paled into insignificance next to what Jim, Claire and I now refer to as “The White Zombie Fight” at the Barrowlands. Preceded by a running battle in the streets with local neds (youthful thugs for anyone outside Scotland), it was one of the most violent, energetic and all-round enjoyable gigs I’ve ever witnessed. Sheer carnage, with high points being Jim kicking Claire (his then girlfriend) in the face as she hoisted him up for some crowdsurfing, followed by all three of us visiting the first aid section at various points in proceedings. Doesn’t get much better than that.
By virtue of his name, band leader Rob Zombie will enjoy a second outing in the Zombiethon, representing his solo output. For now, enjoy a legendary band at their peak with “Super Charger Heaven”.
